Japanese is spoken by over 120 million people, both in Japan and in Japanese communities around the world. Japanese uses a combination of three sets of characters, Katakana, Hiragana and Kanji characters, which were all derived from Chinese characters. Japanese is traditionally written vertically down the page, from right to left, but today it is often also written in the western style, horizontal from left to right.
